Test Code IBHCG BETA HCG, QUANT, POC REFLEX ONLY

Important Note

This is for BhCG testing performed on the iSTAT in the Emergency Room.

Specimen Type

Fresh whole blood collected in a collection tube (evacuated blood collection tube or microtainer tube) with lithium or sodium heparin anticoagulant

Specimen Collection

The sample for testing should be drawn into an evacuated collection tube or microtainer tube containing lithium or sodium heparin.

Fill tubes to capacity.

Samples are to be tested within 30 minutes of collection and be well mixed before tested. The use of other anticoagulants will result in decreased BhCG readings.

Grossly hemolyzed samples can cause a decrease in alkaline phosphatase activity, resulting in a decrease in detection of hCG or quality check codes.

Specimen Volume

1 ml of sample is preferred. 200 ul is the minimum volume. If collected in a tube, the tube must be filled to capacity.

Special Instructions

Partially clotted samples can result in elevated hCG results as well as quality check Codes. To prevent clotting, the sample should be inverted gently at least 10 times to evenly distribute the anticoagulant.

Testing performed on the iSTAT Analyzer.
