Nasal or Nasopharyngeal swab

Specimen Collection - DRY SWAB

    1. Collection:
      1. NASAL and/or NASOPHARYNGEAL
      2. use a sterile flocked (preferred), rayon or foam swab
      3. collected swab put back in its original packaging
    2. Stability:
      1. testing should be performed within 1 hour of collection
      2. if testing is not possible within 1 hour of collection, the swab can be held in its original packaging at RT for up to 2 hours or refrigerated (2-8 C) up to 24 hours

Specimen Collection - Swab in VIRAL TRANSPORT MEDIA (VTM)

    1. Collection:
      1. NASAL and/or NASOPHARYNGEAL
      2. use a sterile flocked (preferred), rayon or foam swab
      3. preferred VTM is M4RT; call GPH Lab 308 568 7450 for list of acceptable VTM
    2. Stability:
      1. Swab should be placed in a VTM container within 1 hour of collection
      2. RT up to 8 hours or refrigerated (2-8 C) up to 72 hours

UNACCEPTABLE

Puritan® PurFlock Standard Tip Ultra® Flocked Swabs, Puritan® PurFlock Mini Tip Ultra® Flocked Swabs and Copan Standard Rayon Tip Swabs are not suitable for use in this assay.
